Soroptimist at Mansfield and District held a fashion show at Fountaindale School near Mansfield. An audience of about 120 people attended the show.  The models wore a variety os styles suitable for day, evening casual and outer wear. Customers were encourage to try on the clothes and to buy. A raffle was also held. A total of £1,107. was raised. The monies were split between Fountaindale Special School and The Derek Bailey Foundation in Gambia. .   ,

A further 173 dresses have been sent to SI Thames Valley stalwart Gill Curry, who will pack the dresses in recycled plastic olive oil drums. A shopping list is gathered for each individual villages and their requirements are met. From the North East we have also received 400 knitted hats for babies and the elderly, these have been sent to Maidenhead via another friend of Soroptimist. We must thank all the ladies who have sewn for this project and to Katie who has arranged for her brother to transport the clothes. Working in partnership with members of the public raises the Soroptimist profile. Team Tots a factory in Eastwood has supplied Jersey cotton fabric and babywear.

SI Mansfield & District took part in paying our respect in laying a wreath at the Civic Centre Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday 13.11.16.  This is our 4th year and each time it was an positive & humbling experience. It was a truly reflective day for us to remember the fallen as well as those who are still serving our country. Proceed for the wreath goes to the Royal British Legion

August 15th was the 10th anniversary of the Forget me Knot, a Dementia support  group who meet on the 3rd Monday of the month in Kirkby in Ashfield.   SI Mansfield and District are on hand to serve refreshments to the Service users and their carers. Advice and support is on the menu as well as beverages and cakes.The group has gone from strength to strength. Homemade sandwiches, savouries and cakes made by the Soroptimist were much appreciated by all, at the anniversary Tea Party A vote of thanks was given to Nicky Hawley who organises the refreshment rota and she received a handmade card displaying forget me knots thanking her for all her hard work. We also volunteer at the Alzheimer’s group in Mansfield at the Tower sand for’ Singing for the Brain’ at the  MIND headquarters on a monthly basis

Meru District is in Tigania East with a population of 136,000. 90% live in rural areas with HIV/AIDs prevalent in the region. Meru Women’s Garden Project will support some of the poorest women-led households in Kenya, and is entirely focussed on providing opportunities to women and girls who may never otherwise be given the chance to earn an income, and gives them status within their community. It fully embraces the three key areas at the heart of SIGBI’s Programme Focus Goals – Educate, Empower and Enable. Improved food production and education will support women and girls to transform their lives and those of others through a process of cascade learning and mentoring thereby reducing poverty, improving health and increasing employment. The following data gives a clear indication of the need for this project: •41% of women and girls are grossly or borderline malnourished •43% live

BREAST CARE UNIT K.M.H ARE BENEFICIARIES. The Breast Care Unit K.M.H. has recently been the recipient of £4,130.00, received from Soroptimist International, Mansfield & District Club. This sum was raised during the year 2015-2016, and the unit was nominated, by Kathy Kings, as the chosen focus for her Presidential term. Kathy is seen presenting a cheque to Mr. Jahan, the Breast Care Unit Consultant, at a Club meeting with members, who have all contributed to make the year successful. The donation will be used, to purchase equipment, that will help to benefit, all women in the locality. Mr. Jahan gave members a short, illuminating talk on the work of this excellent service, and the positive outcomes of screening and early intervention/ treatment. .

Merci Malaysia UK has been fundraising for both UK and overseas – natural or man-made disasters. They raised approx. £1k for Yorkshire flood victims and similar amounts for Syrian refugees in Nottingham. They have also helped vulnerable people in Nottingham with food parcels. They were launched in Sept 2014 and have 4 unpaid trustee, Ranji is one of them. They have one part-time paid staff. Ranji is off to Lebanon on a mercy mission in the Mercy Malaysia camp where they provide water, medicines and sanitation to all but especially the children as many of them are orphans. The UK government is second largest donor in the world for people in camps and they are doing their bid as an international non-governmental organisation, UK registered charity reg no: 1155997.
