World Environment Day – June 2026

in

On Saturday June 13th, members of SI Bingley met to clear litter from the paths along the Riverside Walk as their contribution to World Environment Day 2026. For over 30 years until recently SI Bingley had adopted this area and cleared litter each month as a local Programme Action activity until it was taken over by another Bingley town group. After a successful morning, a welcome cup of coffee was enjoyed by the group with a chance to chat and share ideas for future projects.

Every year, Soroptimists join the UN’s global 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls, held from 25 November to 10 December. This year members of S I Bingley decided to organise a Reclaim the Night Walk   Why Aren’t we safe ??   Violence against women and girls affects one in three women. It is a global human rights emergency that must stop. We walk to demand an end to sexual assault, rape, and all forms of men’s violence and harassment against women and girls. We march to demand an end to the victim-blaming of women who experience sexual assault, rape, violence and harassment. We march to reclaim our streets and take back our spaces and to say that we have a right to access them without any fear. A mass of women pounding the streets together sends a message to our leaders

Putting Cervical Cancer in the Rear View Mirror

Cervical cancer is preventable and curable, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Yet it is the 4th most common form of cancer among women worldwide, with the disease claiming the lives of almost 350,000 women in 2022. Few diseases reflect global inequalities as much as cancer of the cervix. Nearly 94% of the deaths in 2022 occurred in low and middle income countries. This is where the burden of cervical cancer is greatest, because access to public health services is limited and screening and treatment for the disease have not been widely implemented. Since 2023 Soroptimists have been working hard to raise awareness of the importance of screening for the disease and to encourage vaccination to completely eliminate it. Cervical cancer is preventable and curable, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Yet it is the 4th most common form

Ending violence against women is possible, but only if we act together, now 16 Days of Activism against Gender-S I Bingley Soroptimists supported this initiative at Bingley Christmas Tree Festival – with their tree for Peace.Based Violence is a key international moment to call for an end to violence against women and girls (VAWG). It runs from 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until 10th December, Human Rights Day. Violence against women happens in every country and culture, causing harm to millions of women and girls. Risks and challenges to access care increase even more for women and girls living in humanitarian emergencies. Around the world today, prolonged and intense conflicts have resulted in a continuous rise in of all forms of gender-based violence.
