24th January is the UN’s Day of Education Sadly too many girls still face numerous barriers to gaining a full education.  Too many obstacles exist for girls in many communities and parts of the world to gain the meaningful education they deserve and should expect. Members from SI Bingley joined other Yorkshire Soroptimists who were at two Freshers Fairs last week, one in Shipley the other in Bradfords. They asked young students to say where they felt safe or what their safe space looked like. This is part of a larger piece of work as part of BD2025. Members will be at Bingley market square  on Saturday 28 September to ask local shoppers if they feel safe.

SIGBI President Ruth Healey has challenged members to do 90 things to celebrate SIGBI’s 90th year. Members of S I Bingley support Bingley Community Kitchen with 90 tins of corned beef and tinned tuna. We were able to celebrate the many awards won for the postive impact made by the Bingley Community Kitchen project too.

In order to mark the SIGBI  Day of Action, in July, Bingley Soroptimists had a display in Asda, Shipley highlighting the issues of period poverty. Period poverty affects the lives of women and girls internationally, nationally and locally. Research shows that 1 in 9 girls miss educational opportunities because of period poverty and it's becoming an increasing issue for homeless women. Over 300 sanitary products were donated by Asda customers and over £200 donated. So far we have distributed products to Keighley's Women's refuge, the Together Women Project, Bingley community Kitchen, Bingley food bank and BISAN.

On Tuesday 25 June, Bingley member spoke to a packed house about when she attended the ~Commission on the status of women , in New York earlier this year.  She explained the process of the two weeks and in fact it is two conferences under one umbrella . she reiterated the Secretary General’s words – “The male chauvinist domination of new technologies is undoing decades of progress on women’s rights,” he said. After more than 100 years of progress, “technology is now reversing that trend. It is concentrating power again more in the hands of men—to the detriment of all.” Susan hopes to go back again next year when CSW focuses on the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform.

Members of S I Bingley were delighted to hear that one of their service projects - Bingley Community Kitchen has been recognised by both Rotary International  and Soroptimist International. On 24 June, Member Chris Clark received Rotary International's Paul Harris Fellow Certificate of Appreciation from local President Michael Heaton, Rotary International are one of the many partner organisations. In Soroptimist International's report to the United Nations High-Level political forum, 'Intersecting Crises - How Soroptimist International is lifting women and girls out of poverty around the world, Binlgey Community kitchen is mentioned under Sustainable Development Goal 2 - Zero Hunger ( page 16) The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the main United Nations platform on Sustainable Development and has a central role in the follow up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level.
