Three Members of SI St Albans and District were excited to be able to attend Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland’s Conference in Malta this year – Denise Powell, Hilary Ratcliffe and Jane “Pinky” Slatter. The Conference was truly inspirational with fantastic speakers including Dr Helen Sharman OBE – Britains First Astronaut – there is more detail on the Conference website www.sigbi.org/malta2016   The1st photo shows President Denise Powell in the centre, receiving an award from Director of Membership Sue Williams (left) for the Club winning joint  “Photo of the Month” from May  Membership Month “Ask me why I’m a Soroptimist” campaign (winning pic also shown here). On the Friday morning of the Conference the 1000 delegates were asked to wear as much pink as possible and make a “pink splash” by the pool of the Conference hotel for Breast Cancer awareness and fundraising. It was a busy Club Meeting on Nov 7th – the Club Marked “World Toilet Day” by having a bottle sale which raised £67.55 for “Toilet Twinning” www.toilettwinning.org – in addition Members took away disposable recycled coffee cups and  will “spend a penny” between now and our Meeting on Jan 16th. For every £60 we raise we can twin a toilet with a loo halfway around the world, in a country of our choosing. On the same evening we celebrated Sheila Chadwick’s 90th Birthday with a beautiful cake. Sheila also gave a “life talk” – filled with so many stories of how she has benefited the St Albans Community with her career in social health and still continuing her support of the Armoral Hill Day Centre for the elderly to this day. Every year Club Members donate lovely Christmas presents for the clients at the St Albans and

This year is 300 Years since the birth of Capability Brown, so the Club set our on the 2nd of these walks to take in the beauty of Autumn. Our last one was in August – see: www.sigbi.org/st-albans/2016/brocket/ Although the air was cold, the warmth of the camaraderie was as warm as toast! After a cuppa at the café close to the Bridgewater Monument (pictured here) we split into 2 groups and my one went ‘the long way round’ to take in the College, Golf Course and woods.  The colours of Autumn dominated the landscape, the colour of Summer dominated the sky.  The chat was easy and flowing, underfoot was easy and (mainly) dry.  We didn’t see any fauna but the flora more than compensated with its majestic trees covered in leaves of jewelled greens, yellows, bronzes, browns and reds.  Our circular walk took about an hour and a

Workings of the Family Court – an enlightening evening

On Monday 24 Oct we held an evening to learn about the Workings of the Family Court. Our Violence Against Women Programme Team, led by Club President Denise Powell (pictured here centre) arranged for Peter Spencer JP (pictured here right) and Gladys Cummings JP (pictured here left), long standing and highly experienced Lay Judges in the Family Court, to take us through the evening. Judging by the very lively question and answer sessions, the attendees found this to be a thoroughly absorbing subject which threw light on the hard work that Family Justices do to protect children to the best of their ability. With growing numbers of relationships breaking down, the Family Court has an increasing workload ensuring that arrangements are put in place for child placement and parental access etc, with the welfare of the children as the item of paramount importance.  These cases often (but not exclusively)

Our Club President, Denise Powell, took the opportunity whilst on holiday in Australia (Ed: lucky Denise!) to make contact with our sisters from Soroptimist International Gold Coast. Denise reports back here: “Although they didn’t have a meeting during my time there, 3 of the Members (President Alison Robinson, Dorothea Banner and Elwyn Syers) took time out of their summer break to meet with me (over coffee and cake!). I gave them a gift of a book about St Albans, and they gave me a Club pennant to bring home and share with our Club. It was fascinating to hear about some of the programmes that their Club is undertaking, particularly in relation to the indigenous population. They have some neat little activities too, including keeping a ‘penny’ box into which their Members pop the tiniest of the coins at each meeting…..it apparently all mounts up…. A lovely warm group

The Club has now filled 20 backpacks and they are ready to start their journey to Africa – see the Marys Meals Backpack project www.marysmeals.org.uk/get-involved/the-backpack-project/ Mary’s Meals provides life-changing meals to some of the world’s poorest children every day they attend school. Many children receiving Mary’s Meals don’t have basic learning tools such as pencils and notepads. To help them to get the most out of their lessons you can donate a backpack full of the things they need. For many, a Mary’s Meals backpack will be the only gift they’ll have ever had. We are sending 20 backpacks – 10 for boys and 10 for girls – containing pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, notepads, tennis balls, T shirts and shorts or leggings, sandals, soap, towel, toothbrush, toothpaste and a spoon – so that 20 children won’t miss out on getting an education. Pictured here with the backpacks are (l

Abbots Langley beat Knebworth Park Under-13 girls cricket team by just 5 runs to win the fifth annual Soroptimist Audrey Collins Hertfordshire Cricket  League. This year’s final was again held at Knebworth Park between two sides at full strength with 16 County players involved so a close match was always anticipated. The game was played in good spirits and the event was very well organised with a well prepared wicket which encouraged the good standard of cricket played with refreshments available for players and spectators alike through the day. The shield was awarded to the winners as in past years by Denise Powell, President of Soroptimist International St Albans and District who have supported girls cricket in the County for five years now.  Reflecting on his side’s success, lead coach Phil Lewins said: “I believe the League and competition had been a catalyst for the girls’ cricket

Club Members were delighted to meet Cecile Hodoul from SI Victoria, Seychelles while she was visiting her sister recently who lives in St Albans. The group met for coffee and exchanged many ideas about projects to help women and girls in the Seychelles and in St Albans. Meeting up with Soroptimists from different countries is a wonderful part of being a Member – it is like having sisters and friends all over the world – all with the same common objective of improving the lives of women and girls. After little more than an hour the group were firm friends and keen to arrange their next meeting (the Seychelles islands are a very tempting holiday destination!). Our new friends Jeanne (Cecile’s sister) and her daughter, who live locally, will of course be invited to our Club events from now on. Jane Slatter met Cecile and

Colin’s company, Smith’s Coffee, supplies Fairtrade coffee to the Tea Bar at St Albans Magistrates court – the Tea Bar is run by Soroptimist Club Member Jean Eaton with a team of helpers and all profits go to Rennie Grove Hospice Care in St Albans. Gillian Whitworth returns from South Africa and shares what she has learnt first-hand with the Club. On Monday 13 July the Club was treated to an excellent report and presentation from Gillian who is studying at the University of Warwick. She recently conducted a field study on regional sustainability in South Africa. Gillian was based at the Monash University in Johannesburg and from there travelled to the project in Nelspruit. Gender inequality was identified by Gillian and the team as a serious issues affecting sustainability in South Africa – women are suffering from HIV/Aids disproportionately – girls age 15-19 make up 25% of new cases and are 5 times more likely than boys to contract the disease. Rape is estimated at 55,000 per day! – abuse is mostly “domestic”, lasts many years and is not usually reported. In terms of legal advocacy work, refugees are particularly

On Sunday 24th May a girls’ U13 cricket festival was held at Abbots Langley Cricket Ground. 8 teams took part in the tournament with between 85-90 girls playing throughout the day.  Phil Lewins (Abbots Langley U13 Coach) organised the day and despite it being a Bank Holiday weekend and the start of Half Term was determined that it would be all girls (with no boys to make up the numbers). Played under Kwik Cricket rules, the girls’ enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment epitomised the game’s main aim, namely ‘the enjoyment for, and fair play by, all players’. Every member of every team regardless of size, strength or ability is actively encouraged to take part. The vocal encouragement both on the field of play and from the many family members watching echoed around the ground all day. I spoke to family members and coaches as I walked

Member of Soroptimist International St Albans & District Ameeta Sabharwal and her daughter attended a Royal Garden Party in May 2015. Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) received invitation for 6 people to attend because of the work that Soroptimists carry out to improve the lives of women and girls. SIGBI President Jenny Vince attended with her guest, the other places were offered for Members to apply for and Ameeta’s name was drawn. Ameeta and her daughter were also lucky enough to be in a group selected on the day to be personally introduced to the Queen. Probably something to do with the Soroptimist badge Ameeta was wearing – or it could have been because they both looked so fabulous!
