“The Importance of Mangrove Restoration and Conservation”

Dr Selvam, M.Sc. Marine Biology & Ph.D. Mangrove Ecology

 Dr Selvam has 40 years’ experience of marine biology and mangrove research.  He is a former Executive Director of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, India and was recognised for his work on mangrove restoration and conservation by the Thailand Princess Maha Chakri Srinidhorn during the International Conference on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Ecosystems held in the Srinidhorn International Environmental Park.  He is the only Indian to receive this honour.  He has published 11 manuals and books relating to mangrove conservation and management.

Dr Selvam will talk about

  • Mangroves Planting in the Sundarbans Delta – their importance in maintaining the ecosystem in the region.
  • Integrated Mangrove Fishery Farming Systems.
  • Planting of Mangroves elsewhere in the world.
  • Rainforests – the role they play in reducing Climate Change and how they can be preserved.
